HOW WE SOURCE

How We Source: The Research Behind Every Bag

When I decided to start Balance Coffee Roasters, I knew that finding the right beans wasn't going to be as simple as placing an order online and hoping for the best. I'd spent years drinking coffee that let me down. I wasn't going to build a company on that same foundation.

So I got to work.

I started the way most people do — researching. Hours of it. Reading about growing regions, elevation levels, processing methods, and what actually separates a forgettable cup from a transformative one. I learned quickly that the coffee industry has layers. Between the farmer and your cup, there are brokers, importers, roasters, and distributors — and at every handoff, quality can be compromised.

That research led me to a critical decision: I wasn't going to source blindly.

I sought out and partnered with a trusted specialty coffee importer — one with direct, established relationships with the farms themselves. Not a middleman moving bulk commodity coffee. A partner who knew the names of the farmers, the altitudes of the plots, the harvest windows, and the processing standards being used on the ground. Someone whose reputation was already built on transparency and quality long before I came along.

I vetted them the same way I'd want my customers to vet me — with hard questions. Where exactly are these beans grown? How are they harvested? How quickly are they exported after processing? What quality controls are in place? I wasn't satisfied with vague answers. And I didn't stop until I wasn't getting any.

What I found confirmed everything my research had pointed to: the best coffee comes from high-altitude farms in regions like Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Papau New Guinea and Guatemala — where slower growing conditions, rich volcanic soil, and careful hand-harvesting produce beans with depth, clarity, and natural complexity that commodity coffee simply cannot replicate.

Through my Supplier, I was able to trace every bean back to its origin. That traceability isn't a marketing term for us — it's the whole point. It's what lets me look you in the eye (even through a screen) and tell you exactly what's in your bag and why it's there.

I made these choices deliberately. Not because they were the easiest or the cheapest — but because after years of settling for less, I knew what the alternative felt like. And I wasn't willing to pass that feeling on to you.

Every bag of Balance Coffee is the result of that research, that vetting, and that standard. Nothing makes it into your cup unless it has earned its place.
